Lights Out at the Aurora

In August 1996 the Bhakunis keep a crumbling palace hotel in the Kumaon hills, with one telephone, one television and one pot for everybody. Then a stranger walks out of their kitchen into the Saturday movie night holding a glass slab that glows, and the front row screams. Kunti hands her ginger tea before anyone asks her name. Bhawu, seven, decides the girl is a fairy and hides the slab in a cough-sweet tin. Kundan, twenty, winds cassettes back with a pencil and plans his escape to Bombay. The stranger is Saanjh Wadhera, nineteen, a cancelled Delhi creator who stepped through an old kitchen door in 2026. Here she waits three days for a photograph and two hours for a phone call, and the family feeds her, questions her and keeps her. Then the valley tells her what it has said for thirty years. On Diwali night Kundan will vanish with a fairy.
