Anu Ashok

Books that make you think, with turns you won't see coming.

Anu Ashok writes books that make people think and look inward, whether they are fiction or non-fiction. For more than fifteen years he has been building a long-form series that he regards as his life's work, and its first book is planned for mid-2027.

In the meantime, a background in research into how people read and learn lets him build stories with the kind of hooks and twists readers are not used to. The Department of Unfinished Business, a seven-book series about the dead who still have work to do, has become his guilty pleasure, written alongside the larger series. Call Me Revenge, an action thriller, and The Generational Debt, a revelatory work of non-fiction on education and technology, follow.

Away from the page, he leads two organisations at the cutting edge of reading and publishing, and is an unflinchingly doting father to his five-year-old daughter.

Madhumitha A.

Also writing as Madhu A., Merry Amarylees, Minerva Amborella, Miracle Amethyst and Madhu Aravalee

Bestselling stories, from first picture books to novels of conscience.

Madhumitha A. is a bestselling children's author. Her picture books are for children who are just beginning to ask big questions: what a crayon might be capable of, why a tree might be afraid to bloom, whether a small panda can really fly, and how five small friends might save a pond. Each appears under its own name, so that each could find its own young readers, and every one carries a question on its cover that children love to answer for themselves.

For older readers she writes stories about conscience that never once lecture. The Fourth Quarter follows Vikram from the age of five, when he first notices something standing behind his right shoulder, to nineteen, when at last he walks away, and asks, without ever saying so, what we owe the people who need us. She is Co-Founder and COO of Consilium 7.

Dr P. M. Anavaratham

Big feelings, small days, and the wisdom to wait.

Dr P. M. Anavaratham writes for the youngest readers with unhurried warmth. Under the Neem Tree takes the big feelings of childhood, worry, anger, patience and disappointment, out of the classroom and into a grandmother's front yard, where they are learned the way children really learn them: one small day at a time.

The Peepal, Roots of the Banyan, In the Shades of Gulmohar and Mango Tree's Magic Stories follow, each gathered under another tree. He is the author of the Anavaratham School Leadership Series, and is now researching and writing a series of stories from the Tirukkural, the ancient Tamil book of 1,330 couplets on how to live. He is President of Consilium 7.

A. M. Arth

Friday-night books with a family at their heart.

A. M. Arth writes the kind of book you start on a Friday night and finish, a little guiltily, before Saturday lunch. Arth's stories begin with something small and exact, such as a single telephone in a hill hotel or a job sheet clipped inside a cargo plane, and grow into adventures with a family at their heart: loud, loving and slightly ridiculous.

Arth is drawn to places where the past is still within reach, and to characters who would rather solve a problem with their hands than with a phone.

M. A. Aldergill

Fantasy of the old, rooted kind.

M. A. Aldergill writes stories that begin at the bottom of a garden, where the edge of the known world is a line of trees. Aldergill's books are quiet before they are anything else, built from conkers, notes passed under desk lids and the promises children make without knowing what they cost. Then the forest stirs.

Stonewake opens in a North Yorkshire village in 1993, with a red crayon given on the first morning of nursery and a secret one girl keeps to protect the boy she gave it to. It is the first of The Guardian Chronicles, a series of four.

Yeon Dal-on

Family stories with something wild at the edges.

Yeon Dal-on writes family stories with something wild at their edges. The Nine Howls begins with a four-year-old howling at the wolves on the ridge, and the wolves answering.

It is a story of friendship, a lost name and eight wolves who remember, told so plainly and calmly that its last chapters are hard to read slowly.

R. A. Madhavan

The comedy and courage of ordinary Indian homes.

R. A. Madhavan writes about homes where the neighbours know everything and nobody says what they mean. A Girl of Few Words is the story of a young mother who cannot speak, and of the family that slowly learns to hear her: a love story told in notes, signs and one laugh. The Thread Count, Only What Was Mine and One Anna, One Look follow.

Joel David

Speculative fiction on the widest canvas there is.

Joel David writes speculative fiction on the scale of the whole of human history. The Second First Age, the first of three novels, asks what fifteen people would make of an Earth that has moved on without them by a hundred thousand years, and whether they could survive its first year.
